Improving health services & care in Binh Dinh, Vietnam
The New Zealand Vietnam Health Trust was formed in 1997 to continue the work begun by Kiwi health workers in Quy Nhon prior to and during the Vietnam War (1963 - 1975). Until 2010, NZVNHT received NZ Aid support.
Multiple programmes and projects are maintained by the ongoing skills and efforts of volunteer specialist doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and laboratory professionals. The provincial Binh Dinh Department of Health and our Vietnamese clinical colleagues continue to request our mentoring, education and ongoing support. Identified needs of the population and health workforce remain high. For the breadth of work needed we now need to expand our support base & identify new funders. |

HOME BASE QUY NHON, BINH DINH PROVINCE
During the war years, the New Zealand civilian surgical team was based at Province Hospital, Quy Nhon. From 1967 - 1971, the New Zealand Services Medical Team was stationed 100-kilometres further north at Bong Son. The New Zealand Red Cross also had aid teams in central Vietnam during this time. Many close relationships developed between Vietnamese people and New Zealanders during this time. A number of these became family relationships, and multiple lifelong friendships were formed. When New Zealanders returned in the early 1990s they asked to reestablish health service support. Quy Nhon remains the New Zealand Vietnam Health Trust's operational base.
